Donkey Park's Flint winning the coon jump at the 2016 Bishop's Orchard Donkey and Mule ShowCoon jumping, short for raccoon jumping, is an equine sport where the animals- typically donkeys or mules (the offspring of a donkey and a horse)- attempt to jump over a horizontal pole from a standing start. It originated from the practice of hunters in the pursuit of raccoons jumping their mules over fences rather than delay the pursuit to find the nearest gate.
The hunter would dismount, then lay his coat or saddle blanket over the barb-wired fence to make it more visible and also to protect them from the barbs, then jump his mule over the fence. Eventually, the desire to prove who had the best jumpers led to the competition of coon jumping.Because of their anatomy and evolutionary development, this style of jumping from a standing start is something that donkeys and mules are well-suited for.The rules of coon jumping can vary depending on the seriousness of the competition. But, minimally, the donkey or mule is led up to the jump and they must come to a complete stop before attempting the jump. Typically, a blanket or some other drapery is hung over the pole, but this is not always the case. Also, sometimes a box (approx 10'x10') is marked out on the ground in front of the jump to indicate where the animal must stand before jumping. The animals then compete in jumping one after the other with the bar raised after each round of animals has had an attempt to clear the bar. The number of unsuccessful tries each animal is allowed can vary and is determined by the organizers, but is typically one.
The bar is continued to be raised until it cannot be successfully cleared. Touching the bar is not a failure. As long as the bar does not fall, it is a successful jump. Here is a video of a highly competitive coon jumping competition:And here is a video of a more typical fun coon jump that one is likely to see at a donkey and mule show:And here is a video of our very own Flint winning the coon jump in the mini-donkey class at the Guilford Fair Donkey and Mule Show. This was Flint's first competition and I wasn't expecting him to do so well, particularly against some of the good jumpers there.
But, he brought his 'A' game and jumped two bar levels higher (approx 4 inches) than his nearest competition. Thanks to Ingrid for this video. Here is a practical example of jumping during a trail walk. (Thanks, Larry Futrell for sharing). This features (in order of jumping): Stomper, Romper, Suzy, and Flint. (For those interesting in working more with donkeys, see our community service meetup:Add an interesting dimension to your walks in the Hudson Valley by including a miniature donkey companion. Donkeys are, and have been, one of the most valuable animals to mankind, but also one of the least appreciated and misunderstood. Sweet, calm, intelligent, and strong, they are wonderful trail companions and pets among many other things.
Mine make up the Little Brays of Sunshine and serve as therapy donkeys and donkey ambassadors visiting nursing homes, schools, fairs, etc.I have a herd of nine miniature donkeys and am looking for others who want to join me on walks with them around the Hudson Valley. I've found that the people who can appreciate them are generally great people who are fun and interesting.Miniature donkeys are too small to be ridden by adults. They will be walking, not being ridden. You will be helping to lead them. We will generally be sticking to easy to moderate difficulty walks of duration ranging between 2 to 3 hours.Donkeys and experience are not required, but if you happen to have your own donkey, join us!If you are new to donkeys, also watch for our 'Donkey 101' events scheduled through this meetup. At Donkey 101's, you'll learn about the nature and history of man's most under-appreciated and misunderstood domestic partner and it's the only event where you get to meet all of the miniature donkeys plus their herd-mates which include two large standard donkeys, Max, the pony mule, and Stripes, the zonkey (zebra-donkey hybrid).Did you know that donkey milk is closest to human milk? That's just one of the interesting things about donkeys that you'll learn while having fun and getting some exercise and outdoor time with interesting people. For more information, see the page.
